Three out of four Reno homeowners who install new sod end up facing significant problems within the first year, according to local surveys conducted by Nevada landscape specialists.
This staggering statistic reveals a harsh truth about sod installation in our region: what looks promising on day one often turns into a patchy, brown disappointment by the following summer.
The research of 500 Northern Nevada homeowners found that 76% experienced at least one major issue with their new sod within 12 months of installation.
In fact, nearly half of respondents said they've had to partially or completely replace their sod due to these failures, with improper installation techniques being the primary culprit.
One in eight homeowners (12%) admitted they tried installing sod themselves after watching online tutorials, only to face costly repairs later. Fifteen percent reported spending more on fixing sod problems than the original installation cost.
Homeowners aren't just frustrated by these failures – many are actively searching for solutions that actually work in Reno's challenging climate.
Fifty-three percent said finding a reliable sod installation service that understands local conditions is extremely important to them, and clearly the research shows why – only one in four sod installations in our region remains healthy after one full year.
"When you install sod in Reno, you're not just buying grass – you're gambling with Northern Nevada's unique soil and climate challenges," said Elio, CEO at EM Lawns. "This isn't Southern California or the Midwest where standard techniques work reliably. Our high desert environment demands specialized approaches that most installers simply don't understand."
The top three reasons respondents said their sod installations failed were improper soil preparation (72%), incorrect watering protocols (65%) and using sod varieties not suited for Northern Nevada conditions (58%).
Having inadequate drainage systems (51%), poor timing of installation (47%) and failure to address underlying soil issues (43%) were also significant factors.
Typically, homeowners reported spending $3,200 on their initial sod installation, followed by an additional $1,700 on repairs and replacements when problems emerged.
And frustration brings lasting consequences – from wasted weekends trying to save dying grass to staring at brown patches from the kitchen window – the average homeowner spends four months dealing with sod problems before finding an effective solution.
When it comes to expertise, respondents said there's an obvious quality difference when professional installers who understand Reno's specific challenges handle the job versus general landscapers who treat sod installation as a side service.
"No matter how beautiful sod looks on day one, success in Northern Nevada isn't measured in weeks but in seasons," added Elio(CEO of EM L awns). "At EM Lawns, we've developed installation methods specifically for high desert conditions that ensure sod doesn't just survive its first year – it thrives for many years to come."
